Music and Art

Humshaugh First School encourages children's creativity and imagination as well as enjoyment. A range of materials and tools are provided to promote skills in drawing, painting, modelling, needlecraft, textiles, pottery, photography and computer graphics. The school provides an Arts programme covering various aspects of painting, sculpture, drawing etc., alongside music dance and drama. We are actively linked with Queens Hall in Hexham as part of their Arts  award and are a registered Artsmark School with an official logo! Skills are developed progressively, as the children move through the school. The small size of Humshaugh First School allows projects to be covered by different age groups, yet encourages greater control and reflection on their work, as children mature. We are actively seeking to build a register of local artists and craftspeople happy to visit school or to lead special workshops. Already we have made links with The Sill, Queens Hall Artists in Residence Programme, a local Storytelling Project and the Antony Gormley work shop.

Music and Performing Arts

Music and Performing Arts play a very important part in school. Small groups and class groups compose and perform as singers or instrumentalists. All pupils experience percussion work and some learn to play instruments.

We foster a positive attitude towards sharing and enjoying music with others, and whenever possible, we make links with the community e.g. Harvest Festival, Easter and other celebrations.

All children are involved in a Christmas, Easter and Summer Production (see photo gallery) and children in Year 1 to 4 take part in a  local Music Festival every year.  Last year the children in Year 3 and 4 took part in Carmen-Sing in association with the Royal Opera House in London.
